What do we need grounding or earthing for?
Grounding is a practice that can help if you are suffering from flashbacks, unwanted memories and all kind of negative emotions.
It can help with:
· Refocusing on the present moment – dropping an anchor
· Distract you from anxious feelings.
· It can enhance your wellbeing, lower your stress response.
· Helping you with depression and mood.
Where has the technique of grounding evolved from?
Grounding or earthing is a therapeutic technique that focuses on realigning your electrical energy by reconnecting to the earth. There’s little research behind grounding but smaller studies have reported benefits for inflammation, pain, mood, and more.
Grounding can be performed inside or outside, with or without grounding equipment. No matter how you choose to perform grounding, make sure that you’re always aware of your surroundings outside and use earthing equipment safely to reduce risks.
What exercises are great for grounding:
· Focusing on breathing.
· Focusing on noises around you.
· Any kind of awareness training, e.g. body scan
· Engaging in something you love consciously, e.g. a game, sports etc.
· Recite something (poem, song, book)
· Use an anchoring statement: “I am calm and can feel the sunshine on my skin while sitting in my beautiful garden.”
· Visualisation
· Focusing on all senses and on the here and now (in form of meditation)
· Engage with the earth – experience and enjoy nature – explore everything outdoors
